Flood Information

GENERAL INFORMATION: 

All of the Borough of Longport is located in the A-8 Base Flood Plain, which means that it is at or below Elevation 10.00. Being bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Risley’s Channel the bay, on the other, Longport is susceptible to flooding. Flooding can be caused by hurricanes, tropical storms, coastal storms, commonly referred to as Northeasters, and occasional high tides with heavy rain events. Flood water can fill the streets and low lying areas from six (6) inches to two (2) feet of water, depending on the elevation of the ground, such as in the March 62 storm and the December storm of 1992, where, all of Longport was flooded. 

From 1977 to 2002 Borough Residents have filed 363 Flood Insurance Claims totaling $3,684, 054. Of the 363 Flood Insurance Claims 50 properties are considered to be repetitive loss properties. Repetitive loss properties are those properties for which two or more claims of more than $ 1,000. have been paid by the NIFP within any 10 year period since 1978. The 50 repetitive loss properties had flood insurance claims totaling $ 1,517,170. Therefore, 7% of the flood properties accounted for 41% of the total dollar amount of claims submitted.
