School Board Referendum

Some information regarding the School Board referendum that will be presented to our voters March 8. Jann Cohen, School Board Secretary writes the following: “Because of substantial increases in tuition and special education costs charged imposed on Longport by our receiving districts, we are not able to fund the education of the Longport students with the 2% cap on tax increases imposed by the State.

Simply put, the tuition charge by Margate on a per pupil basis has increased this year by 23%, yet we are bound by a 2% cap.

We have used up our fund balance and still do not have enough funds to meet our tuition obligations to Margate, Ocean City and Atlantic City.

Therefore, we are seeking the funds by way of referendum. In the event the referendum fails, we will default on our obligations.

This will be detrimental to the entire town. The polls will be open from 5:00 to 9:00 PM on March 8th in Borough Hall.
