Construction and Renovation Projects Updates (posted 4/6/23)

Numerous improvements are underway in the Borough of Longport. Here is an update on those projects, including anticipated completion dates.

Atlantic Avenue Reconstruction

Construction work on Atlantic Avenue began late January and is on track for completion by mid May. The Atlantic Avenue road construction project spans from 22ndto 27thavenues. Including in the project’s scope of work is the installation of new water and sewer laterals, replacement of stormwater grates and storm-water piping, replacement of handicap access ramps and other sidewalk improvements, and the repaving of Atlantic Avenue.

Monmouth Avenue Reconstruction

Reconstruction work on Monmouth Avenue is on track for completion by the end of this month. Reconstruc-tion areas include 32ndAvenue to the Margate City border. Included in this project is the installation of new handicap access ramps and the repaving of the 32ndAvenue to the Margate City border.

Longport Water Tower Repainting

Longport’s water tower renovation is nearing completion. The inside of the tank and exterior painting has been completed. Scaffolding will soon be removed and the final step will include the return of the tower’s smiling face. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of April.

Bulkhead to be Replaced at 36th Avenue and the Bay

The bayside bulkhead at 36th Avenue is scheduled to be replaced. Work is slated to begin April 17th and will take approximately 45 days to complete.

Longport Police Chief Frank Culmone Accepted into the FBI National Academy

It is with great pleasure to announce that on February 2, 2023, Chief Frank Culmone was officially accepted into the FBI National Academy, Session #286, and will be attending an in-residency training from April 3rd to June 8th, 2023. Chief Culmone will become the first police officer to ever represent the Longport Police Department in such a prestigious venture.

During his 10 weeks in Quantico, VA, he will have the opportunity to network with some of the world’s finest representatives of law enforcement from the United States and around the world.

Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers 10 weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.

FBI Academy instructors, special agents, and other staff with advanced degrees provide the training; many instructors are recognized internationally in their fields. Since 1972, National Academy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia, which accredits many of the courses offered.

Over 53,000 graduates have completed the FBI National Academy since it began in 1935. The National Academy is held at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, the same facility where the FBI trains its new special agents and intelligence analysts.

Board of Commissioners Proclaim January 4, 2023, as Richard B. Hirsch, Jr., Day

The Longport Board of Commissioners honored longtime employee Richard B. Hirsch, Jr. for 29 years of service to the residents of the Borough of Longport. He was presented with a plaque and a proclamation naming January 4, 2023, as ‘Richard B. Hirsh, Jr., Day’ in the Borough of Longport. Hirsch began working for the Borough nearly 29 years ago in various departments. He served most recently as the head of the Building Department, the Atlantic County Municipal Joint Insurance Fund Commissioner, and as the Mel-JIF’s Safety and Claims coordinator.

Hirsch was also honored in the summer for having served the residents of Longport for 50 years as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical services first responder. He obtained the rank of Captain in the fire department in 1991.

During his career at the Borough, he was the recipient of numerous awards and citations including the G.E. Ted Shall Award and Officer of the Year.

Mayor Nick Russo, Commissioner Jim Leeds, Sr., and Commissioner Dan Lawler presented Hirsch with a plaque and proclamation to express their appreciation to Hirsch and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
